Sejak kecil Richard Dunn (Jeff Daniels) selalu punya teman imajiner yang selalu melindunginya. Bahkan sampai dewasa pun Richard masih tetap mengandalkan teman imajinernya ini. Akibatnya, Richard tak pernah benar-benar menjadi dewasa meskipun usianya sudah tak bisa dibilang muda. Anehnya, Richard Dunn justru belajar melepaskan teman imajinernya ini saat ia berkenalan dengan Abby (Emma Stone) yang baru berusia 17 tahun.

Richard adalah seorang penulis yang kehabisan ide. Sudah lama Richard tak menghasilkan novel dan Claire (Lisa Kudrow), istrinya, menyarankan Richard untuk pergi ke Long Island untuk mencari inspirasi di sana. Saat berada di Long Island inilah Richard bertemu Abby yang kemudian menjadi sahabat karibnya.

Tak beda jauh dengan Richard, Abby juga punya teman imajiner meski teman imajiner Abby tak berwujud karakter superhero bernama Captain Excellent (Ryan Reynolds) seperti dalam benak Richard. Tak perlu waktu lama buat dua orang berbeda usia ini untuk saling akrab. Meski masih muda Abby ternyata sudah cukup dewasa dalam berpikir dan Richard belajar banyak dari gadis muda ini.
